One of the biggest? Believing a subject is intrinsically boring. When you’ve decided something you have to learn is boring, that makes every attempt to learn it harder.
A number of “good” math students seem to reach a point during their School where their feeling of mastery over the subject starts to fade away. Suddenly, everything has become pointless. What’s the point of learning how to plot a graph when you have calculators for everything? Most would pick Teen Wolf over trigonometry any day – you can’t resist Tyler Posey!
When the exams are nearing, the student doesn’t know what to do: studying for 10 – 15 hours, cramming information in their brain in the last minute, hoping to score marks. This eventually leads to frustration.
The whole point of education is lost, and studying becomes a punishment rather than a privilege. So what has made learning so boring? Why would a child rather stare at a wall for 3 hours than open a textbook? There are many reasons for this:
# Difficulties with Listening, Concentrating or Sitting Still
The biggest challenge student’s face these days are distractions: TV, phones, laptops, social media… the list goes on. These things may feel trivial at first but get very addicting later. All of this is very common in the pubescent stage. Engage the Students in Other tasks.
Every meal need not be a complete one. You can have them in small portions too. Similarly, studies can be dealt with short spans. This helps them to concentrate in small time gaps.
Sometimes, however, the problem is so severe that you might need to get professional help in terms of their concentration levels and impulsivity.
# Ways of teaching
The traditional lecture is still one of the most common teaching methods since it has the advantage of being able to reach many students in one economical time slot. Schools follow only the classic discussion method of learning which makes it incredibly boring and difficult for the student to concentrate. Sometimes their studies become so repetitive that it does not interest the child anymore. Introducing fun activities in the classroom can help the student concentrate and can help them link the activity to the concept. Activities could range from role plays to online games.
# Teachers Play an Important Role
Teachers follow students through each pivotal stage of development. A great teacher makes learning fun, as stimulating, engaging lessons are pivotal to a student’s academic success. Making the classroom an exciting environment for learning will hold the students’ fascination, and students learn best when they are both challenged and interested.
# Huge workload
When a student makes a resolution to pull up their socks and work hard, their spirit is immediately defeated by the amount of pending workload they have left. It is important to first finish all the pending work before starting on a new task. It is very important to schedule breaks during the study schedule, this allows the child to relax and begin again with a fresh mind.
# Only studying
Only studying frustrates a child. Keeping them entertained with something they like, helps them balance the academic stress this also varies from child to child. It could be reading, playing an instrument or sport.
